NHAI Partners with Reliance Jio for Telecom-Based Highway Safety Alerts Nationwide

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed an agreement with Reliance Jio to deploy telecom-based safety alert systems across national highways, marking a significant step toward proactive road safety using mobile technology.

Addressing India’s Highway Safety Crisis

India’s national highways remain a critical lifeline for commerce and travel but pose persistent safety risks. The new system aims to mitigate accidents by providing advance warnings to drivers, allowing them to adjust speed and behavior before encountering hazards.

How the Jio-NHAI Safety Alert System Works

The initiative leverages Reliance Jio’s extensive network to automatically deliver real-time alerts to Jio mobile users traveling on or near national highways. Key features include:

  • Multi-Channel Delivery: Advance warnings via SMS, WhatsApp messages, and high-priority voice calls

  • Automatic Geo-Targeting: Alerts trigger based on user location proximity to hazardous zones

  • Phased Digital Integration: Will connect with NHAI’s Rajmargyatra app and emergency helpline 1033

The system provides timely notifications about:

  • Accidents ahead

  • Road closures or construction

  • Adverse weather conditions

  • Traffic congestion and speed advisories

“Travellers will receive advance warnings on their mobile phones… enabling them to adjust speed and driving behaviour well in advance,” stated the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Nationwide Rollout and Jio’s Network Backbone

Unlike location-specific pilots, the system targets the entire national highway network. Reliance Jio’s robust 4G/5G infrastructure ensures reliable delivery even in remote stretches, with automatic activation for users detected near highways.

The agreement emphasizes seamless integration rather than complex hardware deployment, making it scalable and cost-effective.

Broader Implications for Road Safety Technology

This public-private partnership represents NHAI’s push toward tech-driven safety solutions. While specific accident reduction targets haven’t been announced, the system addresses a key gap: reactive response versus preventive warnings.

Data privacy remains a priority, with alerts delivered automatically to opted-in Jio users without requiring app downloads or registrations. Future expansions may include integration with other telecom providers.

NHAI officials highlighted the collaboration’s potential: “By partnering with Reliance Jio, we’re harnessing telecom technology to deliver timely, actionable road safety information nationwide.”

The initiative builds on NHAI’s digital transformation efforts, complementing existing tools like Rajmargyatra while introducing location-aware, real-time alerts—a first for India’s highway network.
